The Mixed Bag Truth About Weight Loss And Saunas

saunas and weight loss

There are not many things in life that are pure black and white. Loosing weight in a sauna is a good example. The truth is that you will loose weight in a sauna but there is more to the story. In this case there is much more: good news, bad news and then really good news.

The good news:
The good news is that we are all basically walking water balloons. This doesn't sound so good but if you are trying to lose weight it can be very good. Since we are about 70% water, it accounts for about 70% of our weight. Loosing water can be quite easy.

A sauna is a very efficient and enjoyable way to loose water weight. There are not many diets that require you to rest and relax for extended periods of time. One session in a sauna can literally take off pounds.

The bad news:
Here is the bad news: it is as easy to regain water as it is to loose it. Shortly after taking a sauna you will replace the water and therefore the weight that was lost through sweating.

The really good news:
Most of this is probably not a surprise to anyone but as they say, "here is the rest of the story". There is much more going on in a sauna than the obvious. The increased heat kicks in your body's cooling system. This process elevates your metabolism as well as heart rate. Here is where the true weight loss comes from in a sauna.

The increased heart rate and metabolism in a sauna will burn calories. Some studies estimate a burn of hundreds if not thousands of calories (think multiple cookies) in a typical sauna session. Minute for minute it has been compared to the amount of calories burned when you are taking a brisk walk. Not bad for just lying there relaxing.

The best part is that these are calories (fat cells) not just water. Just like burning calories on the treadmill or tennis court their replacement is not automatic. Your overall caloric intake/output ratio determines if you will regain and carry around those calories again for the rest of your life.
