Your sauna door can be a focal point of your custom sauna.

The constantly changing environment of a sauna, is hard on a sauna door. Your custom sauna deserves to have a stable and attractive door. Building a stable door from scratch can be a tricky undertaking. Even if you are working on a tight budget this is one place that you may want to splurging a bit.

  • Many sauna kit dealers have doors available to buy separately.
  • If you are buying a kit it may be worth asking about substituting or upgrading the door since it is such a focal point.
  • The variety of doors is impressive and it’s worth doing some research to find one that suites you.
  • There are enough styles that you can still get the look of a completely custom sauna.
  • Another option is to take a standard door and retrofit it.

Whether you start from scratch or get a pre-built sauna door, here are some things to consider:

  • Sauna doors are smaller than standard doors due to lower ceiling heights, limited space and a desire to conserve heat. Generally they will be less than 78” tall and only 24” wide.
  • The door should be insulated and seal tightly to save heat.
  • They should open outward for safety and space.
  • Hinges and hardware need to be non-corroding.
  • Mounting the door an inch or so above the floor creates a convenient fresh air intake.
  • Buying or building a door that has a window in it may eliminate the need to frame in a window somewhere else. The glass should be tempered, and you may want it tinted.
  • Siding can be added to the inside of the door to match the interior finish. If you do this remember to plan for the extra thickness when framing the doorway.
  • An attractive door can draw the eye away from other parts of the sauna that may be less skillfully built.

Whether well built or poorly built, the sauna door will get a lot of attention from visitors to your new custom sauna. It will leave an impression. You should do what it takes to be sure it is a good impression.
