SAUNA CONSTRUCTION

The Sauna
This is the “Holy Grail” if you want to build your own sauna. The 235 pages cover construction, use and benefits of the Finnish bath in a very thorough manner. Rob Roy is a crusader for the Cordwood construction method of construction. Much of the book deals with this building method but it also covers a wide variety of other construction styles from Post and Beam to conventional framing. Outdoor saunas are a main focus but adapting the information for an indoor sauna would be simple. The author assumes you have some basic construction knowledge but if you are at all “handy” you will find all the sauna specific details you need. This is the classic resource and if you get only one book to help you build your sauna this should be the one.

How To Builds A Sauna
This is a straight forward, no fluff, guide to building a sauna. It’s not new (©1978) but the building methods are as valid now as they were when written. If you are looking for someone to take you by the hand and show you exactly how to build your sauna this is a good resource. In it’s 128 pages you find lots of easy to follow diagrams showing you all aspects of construction. Even a beginning builder will do well with this book. There is not a lot of discussion of variations or room for creativity. What it does do is clearly show you one good way to build a sauna.

GENRAL CONSTRUCTION

How To Build Small Barns And Outbuildings
This is a very visual guide to conventional building techniques. It covers construction methods by showing you how to build various projects like a studio, a woodshed, a child’s playhouse, 2 sheds and a garage. Both the “Roadside stand” and the “Chicken house with a view” could easily be converted to make a great sauna. The complete building process is covered from foundations to roofing. Everything a beginner needs to know is in this book.

Building A Shed
This excellent book shows various techniques used to build projects including a lean-to shelter, a Saltbox Potting Shed, a Colonial-Style Shed and a Gambrel Storage Barn. Chapters also cover construction methods and building materials. You are taken step-by-step through each project so that even a beginner could easily succeed. It takes a very “paint by numbers” approach. If you want to build your own sauna the Colonial-Style Shed and the Saltbox Potting Shed would both make outstanding saunas. There are a multitude of pictures showing buildings with nice architectural flair. This may well inspire you to go beyond a basic conventional building style and build something with real character.

SAUNAS AND YOUR HEALTH

The Holistic Handbook Of Sauna Therapy
If there ever was a book that covers a topic in detail, this is it. The health aspects of using a sauna are thoroughly explained and documented. This is not a book about how to build your own sauna but about how and why to use your sauna. If you are not convinced of the health benefits of a sauna yet, read this book and you will understand why so many people are devoted to saunas. There is quite a bit of additional discussion about how to get and stay well beyond the use of saunas.

Sauna: The Hottest Way To Good Health
This is a quick and easy read about saunas and health. At 60 pages there is not a lot of detail but the basics of how to take a sauna and the positive health benefits are clearly discussed. If you are looking for a to-the-point guide for using your sauna this may be the book for you. One of the best parts of this book is the inclusion of healthy recipes. There are 11 delicious looking recipes for things like Whole Wheat Pita-Pizza and Gazpacho.
